The Krell FPB (Full Power Balanced) 700cx is Krell’s latest top-of-the-line amplifier in the FPB stereo amplifier line-up. The amplifier is rated at 700 watts per channel into eight ohms, 1400 watts into four ohms and a whopping 2800 watts into two ohms. Having recently reviewed the Krell FPB 400cx, I was reminded of the Krell’s top build quality. Weighing in at 180 pounds and measuring 19 inches wide, 10.3 inches tall and 25.5 inches deep, makes the Krell FPB-700cx the title-holder for the most massive amplifier ever to grace my listening room. The 700cx’s large black anodized face and three small blue LEDs give the amplifier a very appealing, stately appearance. The front panel also has an infrared sensor for remote operation and interaction with other Krell products. The rear panel has two pairs of speaker binding posts per channel for bi-wire applications. These can be easily thumb-tightened, but they will not accept bare wire, banana plugs or pins -- only spade lugs will work. It offers balanced connections, as well as the proprietary Krell CAST™ inputs, which I’ll cover later in this review. The rear panel also includes the remote control Krell Link to turn the amplifier on and off, a very substantial non-detachable power cord, as well as a power breaker switch and a pair of handles to carry the beast around. Krell recommends a 20-amp circuit for this amplifier, which I was able to oblige.
 

FEATURES

While the Full Power Balanced X Series Stereo amplifiers have much in common, there are also some important reasons for investing in the additional power. Each amplifier houses a massive power supply, doubling in size with each step. When the power increases from 300 Watts to 400 Watts and 700 Watts, the power supplies increase from 2000 Watts to 4000 Watts to 8000 Watts, respectively. While intuitively one might think that the only benefit of additional power from the same electrical design is the ability to play louder, the huge power supplies in the X Series provide empirical evidence that says the amplifiers do much more. More power delivers more authority on the low end, greater ease through the critical midrange frequencies, and effortless highs. In short, with every significant increase in power, there is a palpable increase in the believability of the sonic presentation.

The direct descendants of the awesome Master Reference Amplifier, the Full Power Balanced X Series Amplifiers extend the Krell technologies of Sustained Plateau Bias and CAST. These advancements, now termed Sustained Plateau Bias III and CAST II, have increased the power output capability and bandwidth of the Full Power Balanced amplifier platform.

All Krell Full Power Balanced X Series amplifiers also include the array of engineering advances that have made Krell the premier amplifier manufacturer in the world: Class A output, the most linear and accurate topology for an
audio power amplifier.

A balanced topology for the lowest noise and greatest detail retrieval from a recording. Massive power supplies for complete dominance of a speaker. Fully regulated power supply and output stage operation for stability under all power line and speaker fluctuations. Virtually unlimited power output to drive loudspeakers to their peak levels of performance.

In addition to these technologies, the X Series increases the power to unprecedented levels, from the 300 Watt per channel Full Power Balanced 300cx Stereo Amplifier to the incredible 750 Watt per channel monaural amplifiers, the Full Power Balanced 750Mcx Monaural Amplifiers. The X Series offers three stereo
amplifiers and three monaural amplifiers, allowing the user to select the combination which best meets their stereo, multichannel audio, or movie needs.
